Bullying is the intentional harm to others which may be carried out by an individual or group. It can be done repeatedly and wilfully and it is an imbalance of power leaving the victim defenceless.

Bullying can take many forms. The impact of technological advancement in our modern era is evolving and changing the nature of bullying, making it harder to define and detect.

Bullying includes both emotional and physical abuse towards others. This includes:

  • Name-calling
  • Teasing
  • Kicking, hitting, punching, pushing, scratching and any other type of physical abuse
  • Stealing belongings
  • Race or colour
  • Gossiping
  • Spreading hurtful or untrue rumours
  • Offensive emails or text messages
  • Religion
  • Exclusion from groups.

Bullying is not just harmful to the victim, but to all involved. Victims of bullying can experience a lack in confidence, have a low-esteem, anxiety, feel depressed, have self-doubt, inflict self-harm and, in extreme cases, commit suicide.
